Communication Research: As We Stand and Sing

Is there a connection between worship preferences and communication theory?

Let’s find out.

In my communications research class at Harding University, I studied how communication expresses itself through worship preferences. Drawing inspiration from gender theory and the uses and gratifications approach, I examined the reasons why worshippers at a church of Christ in Tennessee choose to attend the traditional a cappella service, and a new instrumental service called The Awakening. Both services share a commonality in their purpose for bringing people close to God, but they differ in format, style, and repertoire.

Methodology
Mixed Methods: Questionnaire survey with both multiple select and paragraph response sections for coding purposes.
